The $550,000 Daily Risk Most Districts Don't See Coming
🕵️ PD Intelligencer - NOV 9 2024
Over 130 Hueneme Elementary School District teachers are 'coasting through their classrooms' and learning more about technology and teaching in COAST! Located in Port Hueneme, CA, the district includes nine elementary schools and two middle schools -- over 8,000 students. HESD has made it part of their mission to 'empower students by teaching them critical thinking skills through a rigorous academic experience in a digitally-rich environment.'
Behind that digitally-rich environment are innovative educators and TOSAs who are using technology to support and elevate learning opportunities. Since 2017, these educators have been playing COAST to explore and reflect on new technology teaching. COAST stands for Collaborative, Online, Activity-based, Self-paced Training. The 'Surfs-up' themed game is the brainchild of HESD's Technology Resource Specialist Liz Hoppe, who has developed missions and activities that align with the districts goals for learning, including: Digital Tools, Professional Learning, Pedagogy, Collaboration and SAMR.
There are two versions of the COAST Game: Coast Through My Classroom for teachers, and Coast Like a Boss for administrators. Hoppe encourages players with fun incentives, like coffee and donuts for top players and schools, as well as level-based incentives like tee-shirts and upgraded staff iPads.
Check out some of the fun activities from the COAST game, and visit the HESD COAST Twitter page.
