Alexa, Do My Homework: How AI Will Shape the Classrooms of Tomorrow

Alexa, Do My Homework: How AI Will Shape the Classrooms of Tomorrow

  • Dr. Mike Swize discusses three types of artificial intelligence (AI): predictive, reactive, and generative.
  • Predictive AI like Netflix makes recommendations based on your past viewing history. It improves the more data it collects. This type of AI is ubiquitous today.
  • Reactive AI like Alexa simply responds to commands and queries. It doesn't learn and predict based on past interactions.
  • Generative AI like ChatGPT can create original content. This emerging type worries educators as students may use it to generate papers and assignments.
  • Swize notes that predictive AI enhances our experiences while generative AI has significant implications for education that are just beginning to unfold.
  • He encourages people to try out ChatGPT to better understand its potential impact on learning.

I was watching Netflix the other night, and I realized my experience with a streaming service is being impacted by art official intelligence.

You know Netflix asks you, did you like this?

Did you love this?

And then the next time you watch something, it says you may also like.

And the more data that we put into that system, the better it is at predicting what we would like in the future.

That's one of the three types of AI. It's, predictive.

It takes past information and makes predictions about the future.

And I think that's the one, that we use most in our day to day life, and we're really grateful for. Amazon does a great job of this too, and so does YouTube.

YouTube suggests videos based on the videos that I've watched in the past.

This type of artificial intelligence really is everywhere, and I think it increases our experience.

Another type of artificial intelligence is reactive. It's really just listening and understanding, taking input. So an example of this might be Alexa.

My parents use Alexa all the time. They use Alexa to ask about the weather. They use Alexa to play music in their condo.

But Alexa isn't predicting what they would like in the future based on their past.

So it's more of a react type of artificial intelligence.

The third one, the one that's getting the most attention is generative, and that's artificial intelligence that creates something.

This is like chat GPT, and I've encouraged you previously to take a look play around with chat GPT and think about its impact on education.

It's very significant, and it's just barely getting started. So three different types of artificial intelligence, reactive, predictive, and then this generative that really provides creative construction, and it's the one teachers are a little bit worried about students creating papers using artificial intelligence.
